Storage

If you haven't yet, I'd highly recommend buying one of these reduced size MMC cards, so you can boot from MMC and have plenty of space for data.  This will also give you an easy way to revert to the untouched system.

2 gig

GPS

You may also want to purchase a bluetooth GPS unit (I have instructions on this below):

Garmin GPS10 (sensor only) @ 118.62 shipped, the Deluo GPS @ 112.72 shipped, or the Deluo GPS with DVD @ 114.76.  I've heard good things about both of these, but for your own peace of mind, as they are somewhat expensive (although about the lowest prices you'll find for this quality) buying from Amazon makes returns relatively painless.  If you want a cheaper option, Geeks.com has some great prices on two units.

Connecting USB devices

And if you want to connect USB devices to the 770, like a keyboard or storage device (external drive, memory stick, etc), follow my directions here.

The Y-cable you need can be found with this 2.5" hard-drive enclosure.  At 9.12, shipped free, this is a great deal.

If you have a Cingular cell phone with Bluetooth, you can use it as a modem to allow the Nokia 770 to get online.  If you have EDGE connectivity, do the following:

Go to Apps/Tools/Connection Manager

In the Connection Manager Menu, select Tools/Connectivity

Press "Connections"

Either create a New Connection or edit your current "Cingular Internet" connection.  Using "Packet data", click Next.  Type the following settings:

Access point name: wap.cingular
Dial-up number: *99#
User name: WAP.CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

That's it.  Click Finish.  Warning: you might want to get the $20 unlimited data plan offered by Cingular, as they charge $.01/KB of data.  Also, tethering this device might be in violation of your service agreement, although the Cingular rep at the store I purchased the plan from said this was fine.

First, let's talk peripherals.

On to the software

The information that was here has been replaced with a guide I'm writing (as I advance through using the 770); any feedback would be appreciated:

http://examplified.net/guide/Nokia_770/

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.  YOU COULD DESTROY YOUR 770.

OK, I've gone through the following sites

http://tabletblog.com/2006/01/usb-power-injector-2.html
http://tabletblog.com/2006/01/no-solder … ethod.html
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/easy_us … hub_setup/

and think this is the best way to get usb devices to work with the 770.

Get this Cyberpower Battery Powered USB Hub.  This will feed the 5 V to the 770 and power whatever device you're using.

The little end (B Type, 5 pin) of the Y cable that comes with this drive (cheapest cable available - plus you get a free enclosure!) will plug into the Nokia 770.  Now  you have two big ends (A Type, 4 pin).  One needs to be connected in one of the 4 ports on the hub, while the other is connected to a gender changer (2.39 + shipping via Amazon) and connected to the "usb connector" pictured below:

This seems to be the most cost-effective/portable way of going about this.  Note: you could make the cables yourself, but I won't go into that here.

Some other things I was thinking had to do with some of these products (click the image to go get more information):

This is a neat little device.  It has Debian Linux installed, so it's hackable by the linux community.  First visit my Getting Started guide, then come back here.  Here are some things to do with it:

Memory

The 770 should read up to 2 gig Reduced Size MMC cards.  So, buy one of these:

1 gig
2 gig

and then run the whole system off of them:

Internet

To access the internet, you have to either have WiFi (b/g) or a bluetooth phone that can be tethered to a bluetooth device, like this one.  If you have dial-up, you will not get internet because the 770 does not have a modem.

If you have Cingular, you can do as I did to tether the 770:

For GPS

First you'll need a GPS/bluetooth receiver:

Garmin GPS10 (sensor only) @ 118.62 shipped, the Deluo GPS @ 112.72 shipped, or the Deluo GPS with DVD @ 114.76.  I've heard good things about both of these, but for your own peace of mind, as they are somewhat expensive (although about the lowest prices you'll find for this quality) buying from Amazon makes returns relatively painless.  If you want a cheaper option, Geeks.com has some great prices on two units.

Then some GPS software.  Either this commercial package @ $149 (US maps):

Buy this one--only one w/ US maps

OR the free version.

I have instructions for installing mapper @ http://www.dealminded.com/viewtopic.php?id=140

Skype/Telephoney

Skype does not work.  But Gizmo does (see: http://www.dealminded.com/viewtopic.php?id=140).

Connect a harddrive, usb keyboard or Ipod (as a harddrive)

See my other post: http://www.dealminded.com/viewtopic.php?id=116

Other applications

http://maemo.org/
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/applicationcatalog2006/

They have a bunch of software ported over for the Nokia 770.

Warning

Some of this stuff requires the use of linux command line.  There's a lot of people willing to help you, but it's not for the light-hearted.  For some people, the Nokia N800 NSeries Internet Tablet may be a better device, with webcam, faster processor, etc.

Also, if you're planning on using GCal (google calendar) and the like, you need to make sure the Opera web browser (the one on the 770) can use their javascript.  If Opera can, the 770 can.  If Opera can't, the 770 can't.  By the way, GCal sort of works on Opera.  Support should be coming soon though.
