The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is easily the coolest gadget I've bought in a long time.  It runs Linux, has Wifi, can connect to Bluetooth phones, has a great GPS program...the list goes on and on.  And the best thing about it is that it's being sold CHEAP.  $130 cheap!  Check out the deal and some of the tutorials I've written.

Using USB devices with the Nokia 770

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.  YOU COULD DESTROY YOUR 770.

OK, I've gone through the following sites

http://tabletblog.com/2006/01/usb-power-injector-2.html
http://tabletblog.com/2006/01/no-solder … ethod.html
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/easy_us … hub_setup/

and think this is the best way to get usb devices to work with the 770.

Get this Cyberpower Battery Powered USB Hub.  This will feed the 5 V to the 770 and power whatever device you're using.

The little end (B Type, 5 pin) of the Y cable that comes with this drive (cheapest cable available - plus you get a free enclosure!) will plug into the Nokia 770.  Now  you have two big ends (A Type, 4 pin).  One needs to be connected in one of the 4 ports on the hub, while the other is connected to a gender changer (2.39 + shipping via Amazon) and connected to the "usb connector" pictured below:

This seems to be the most cost-effective/portable way of going about this.  Note: you could make the cables yourself, but I won't go into that here.

Some other things I was thinking had to do with some of these products (click the image to go get more information):

Re: Using USB devices with the Nokia 770

Jeff,
When using the powered USB hub, does the 770 recognize any usb drive as an external storage device without any additional software?

Yeah, that's my understanding - if it works with Deb. Linux without standard mass storage drivers, then it should work on the 770.

Re: Using USB devices with the Nokia 770

Are the ports on a USB all equal.... so you don't have to specifically use the 'uplink' port? I like the enclosure and battery power... but aren't we going to have to solder on the inside to send power back up the correct cable headed to the n770?

Ahh... reread... plan is to use the Y cable. I think I will get this and jump the power to get it back up the 'incoming' cable.

Ahh, so no Y cable?  Let me know how it goes!  Pictures/instructions for your solution would be great!

Re: Using USB devices with the Nokia 770

I posted earlier about NOT being able to "boot" from the MMC card. Problem SOLVED!  I was using the wrong firmware image...  Now if I could only get my Nokia 770 to "see" my Bluetooth receiver... so I can use Maemo Mapper....

Re: Using USB devices with the Nokia 770

I just reflashed my N770 with the NON-Hacker (Latest 2006) and Maemo-Mapper now works fine.  But, alas now it won't boot from the MMC card! Oh Well!
