Featured Deal

The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is easily the coolest gadget I've bought in a long time.  It runs Linux, has Wifi, can connect to Bluetooth phones, has a great GPS program...the list goes on and on.  And the best thing about it is that it's being sold CHEAP.  $130 cheap!  Check out the deal and some of the tutorials I've written.

Making the Nokia 770 do cool(er) stuff

This is a neat little device.  It has Debian Linux installed, so it's hackable by the linux community.  First visit my Getting Started guide, then come back here.  Here are some things to do with it:

Memory

The 770 should read up to 2 gig Reduced Size MMC cards.  So, buy one of these:

1 gig
2 gig

and then run the whole system off of them:

http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howto_e … _mmc_card/

Internet

To access the internet, you have to either have WiFi (b/g) or a bluetooth phone that can be tethered to a bluetooth device, like this one.  If you have dial-up, you will not get internet because the 770 does not have a modem.

If you have Cingular, you can do as I did to tether the 770:

For GPS

First you'll need a GPS/bluetooth receiver:

Garmin GPS10 (sensor only) @ 118.62 shipped, the Deluo GPS @ 112.72 shipped, or the Deluo GPS with DVD @ 114.76.  I've heard good things about both of these, but for your own peace of mind, as they are somewhat expensive (although about the lowest prices you'll find for this quality) buying from Amazon makes returns relatively painless.  If you want a cheaper option, Geeks.com has some great prices on two units.

Then some GPS software.  Either this commercial package @ $149 (US maps):

Buy this one--only one w/ US maps

OR the free version.

I have instructions for installing mapper @ http://www.dealminded.com/viewtopic.php?id=140

Skype/Telephoney

Skype does not work.  But Gizmo does (see: http://www.dealminded.com/viewtopic.php?id=140).

Connect a harddrive, usb keyboard or Ipod (as a harddrive)

See my other post: http://www.dealminded.com/viewtopic.php?id=116

Other applications

http://maemo.org/
http://maemo.org/community/wiki/applicationcatalog2006/

They have a bunch of software ported over for the Nokia 770.

Warning

Some of this stuff requires the use of linux command line.  There's a lot of people willing to help you, but it's not for the light-hearted.  For some people, the Nokia N800 NSeries Internet Tablet may be a better device, with webcam, faster processor, etc.

Also, if you're planning on using GCal (google calendar) and the like, you need to make sure the Opera web browser (the one on the 770) can use their javascript.  If Opera can, the 770 can.  If Opera can't, the 770 can't.  By the way, GCal sort of works on Opera.  Support should be coming soon though.

Help

I'm willing to offer what help I can, but there are some good forums as well:

Jeff,
Have you used the Navicore North America software?  Haven't seen any reviews and I'm hesitant to drop more than the cost of the 770 on it.

Haven't used it, and I agree about the price.  Have you used Maemo-mapper?  It's pretty slick, although I still need to find out if I can connect to two bluetooth devices (modem/gps) at the same time.  Happen to know?

Re: Making the Nokia 770 do cool(er) stuff

I've seen the same question asked at another forum, but no response.  I'll have to try the MM.  I was kinda hoping for a GPS solution that would allow me to calculate routes from the 770...unless I misunderstand, Maemo Mapper can't create routes-they have to be created online and then downloaded.

Does the Navicore software calculate routes w/o hitting a server?  I've had software packages for my phone, and they all call home to get routes.

For 150 clams, it had better be an all-in-one package....but, I can't confirm based on the info provided on the website.

Yeah, I can't confirm it either based on their website (for 150, you think they'd be a little more informative).  By the way, I answered my own question, you CAN have two bluetooth connections at once.  Which means I can use my Cingular data package and gps unit to do on-the-fly routing.

You might wait until v2.0 of Maemo Mapper comes out before you shell over 150 bucks.  Mapper's author has a discussion going on here about things to come, and he's getting a lot of pressure for connectionless routing.  I just don't know if that's possible though.  You need a lot of information and a lot of algorithm processing to get routes.  That's why I have my doubts about Navicore's software.  He will, however, have perspective routing, such that the maps rotate with you.  smile

Ahh, great news!  Would you mind doing a review of the Navicore software for us?

Ok Jeff but I'm new to the 770  and also new to sat nav.
I only bought 770/satnav package last saturday so not really had much chance to use it (the satnav that is).

As I've been toying with idea of getting satnav for a while, but been a bit hesitant because of the cost and how often I would actually use it, the idea of combing it with an internet tablet /mp3/video player at a good price finally swayed me to go for it.

Like I say i've not used it much but it did seem pretty intuitive to use.

Some sceen shots here http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/little.plumb/Nokia770.

Basically 2 screens, the mapping screen and the menu screen, from where u can find a route by inputing origin & destination in street/city number form or postcode (zip in usa) or u can pick from favourites, poi, or history.
Settings in menu screen lets u choose voice type, guidance volume what POIs to warn ur approaching (get free speed cameras in UK) traffic info u pay extra for.

The GPS package includes a BT receiver which seems pretty sensitive, it worked in a compartment under the dash, the DVD with the maps, a 1gb rs-mmc pre-loaded, in car charger and windscreen mounting kit, see photo link.
The 770 and BT gps unit share the same charger so can only charge one at a time but I believe GPS unit can last 10+ hours.

The one time I actually used it was on roads I knew but it gave clear instructions in good time and if you did deviate off route it just recalculated no problem. The maps seem clear enough although not using a satnav before I've nothing to compare.

At the end of the month I'm going upto the lake district (UK) for a walking holiday so I'll get a better feel for it then and hopefully report back. Just a pity it's not waterproof and I could take it off road using UK ordnance survey mapping, if that could ever be used on it (http://www.memory-map.co.uk/maps_uk_onland.htm), then it would be nearly my perfect gadget.

Re: Making the Nokia 770 do cool(er) stuff

OK well I've had more time to use the Navicore on unfamiliar roads and I found it really useful in guiding me to my destination particulary the final part of the journey where it found the car park of the accomdation.

Decided not use the screen mount as a little bulky, and also screen can be difficult to read in bright conditions, so the 770 was held by front seat passenger. (that was me on one occasion)

I found looking at the screen a bit distracting and for me the voice commands were more important. If a turn was involved you are given 2 warnings one saying say "turn left in 70 yards" then when you are at the turn you get the command "now turn left".

I was impressed with the nokia gps receiver u get with the navicore package it seems v sensitive and quick to pick-up satellites and u could probably just leave in the glove box and it would still work, no need to have it sitting on top of the dashboard.

So all in all I glad I bought the Navicore package. I suppose for the extra money I could have nearly bought a standalone sat nav but whether I would have got as good a receiver or all the maps I got with Navicore (full Europe) plus speed cameras I doubt it.
